Exit Strategy

An exit strategy allows wine collectors to liquidate their assets. AWI experts recommend the 'when and where' of these strategies to our clients. Our strong network of merchants has now expanded into Hong Kong and Shanghai especially since China and Hong Kong now command around 60% of the Asian wine market. In a boost to Hong Kong's bid to become Asia's fine-wine trade hub, wine import taxes were removed in 2008. Auction houses like Christie’s and Sotheby’s have started wine auction businesses in Hong Kong, while Bonham’s also conducted wine auctions there from April 2008 with an impressive hammer rate of 96.4%. Where possible AWI will endeavor to on sell clients wines directly to private investors, therefore there are no auction house fees to be paid.

Vintage Selection

Vintage refers to the soil, weather and climate conditions of the region when grapes for wine making are harvested. A good vintage is important as favorable conditions produce good grapes and subsequently high quality wines. Marketability and returns on good vintage wine follow likewise. An example of good vintage wine is the 1998 Penfolds Grange. The Grange series is recognized as Australia’s number one wine and has been for the last 25 years. The 1998 offering is said to be the best year ever in 52 year history of production. The buzz about the vintage created such an enormous demand in the market that upon release in May 2003, each bottle was sold for A$395. Sold out on the very same day, the wine began appearing at auction within a week where it traded for almost A$700 per bottle.
